Yonabaru Town is located on the southern part of the east coast of Okinawa Island, approximately 9 km from the prefectural capital, Naha City. The history of Yonabaru Town is ancient, as it appears in Okinawa's oldest collection of folk songs, "Omosausi," under the names "Yonaharu" and "Yonahabama (Yonaha Beach)." The name "Yonaha" is said to refer to the name of an area that was once a coastal region, where ancient inhabitants of Yonabaru first settled in the southwestern part of the town known as Kamiyonabaru.
The "Kamiyonabaru Kanachi Hall" was established in April 2021 as a civic service center for the residents of Yonabaru Town, following its unification with the new town hall. The theme of the curtain installed in the facility is "Undulation," inspired by the traditional harvest prayer ceremony known as "Yonabaru Ozuna Hiki," which boasts a history of over 440 years. The curtain depicts the beginning of this ceremony, where the ropes from the east and west come together, and the male and female Kanachi (Kanachi sticks) are connected. The various "thoughts" of the people undulate during the time leading up to the start of the ceremony.
The design of the curtain conveys feelings of "anticipation," "excitement," and "unity" that people experience before the ceremony. The colors are divided into distinct hues for the east and west, vividly expressing the overall liveliness in the background.
