This facility was built in 1928 (Showa 3) to commemorate the municipal construction of Beppu City. It is the oldest existing reinforced concrete building in Oita Prefecture, and restoration and renewal work began in 2014. It currently houses the Beppu Central Community Center and the Beppu Citizens' Hall and has been selected as a significant work of modern movement architecture in Japan by DOCOMOMO Japan.
The stage drapery in the public hall's grand hall, resulting from this renewal project, features a design inspired by bamboo craftsmanship, using Tango (Hook) curtain. Beppu has been known for its high-quality bamboo since ancient times. Additionally, due to the influx of visitors seeking healing in Japan's number one hot spring destination, Beppu, bamboo crafts such as baskets and strainers have been produced as souvenirs.
The highly skilled bamboo crafts of Beppu have forged a distinct path in the realm of artistic craftsmanship, separate from mass production, continuing to etch the history of bamboo artistry. The layers of intricately woven bamboo evoke the history of Beppu. This boldly designed drapery, featuring various beautiful woven patterns, is hoped to be cherished by the community and contribute to further regional development.
