Kyoto Tokyu Hotel is a prestigious, traditional Japanese-style hotel located just north of the World Heritage site Nishi Hongan-ji Temple. The culture of Kyoto has long been nurtured by water, and the hotel makes use of underground natural water sourced from the rich aquifers of the Kamo River system, which is used in guest rooms and the restaurant. Water flows gently from just beside the entrance, through the lobby garden, recreating the atmosphere of the Horikawa River at Gojo. This serene water feature is unique to the hotel, and we were pleased to install a custom Axminster carpet in the lobby in front of the reception desk, adjacent to this flowing water. The carpet design incorporates the gentle water flow from the garden, unifying the interior and exterior spaces. While typical Axminster carpets feature an all-cut pile, this custom design includes carved detailing, adding depth to the carpet’s texture and allowing the pattern to shift depending on the viewing angle. The colors specified by the client—green and blue—were used to complement the historic atmosphere of Kyoto.
